God doesn’t want your money…or does he? (Parts One and Two)

God doesn’t want your money…or does he? (Part One)

God doesn’t want your money…or does he? (Part Two)

Does God really want (or need) your money? This two-part series explores the concepts of stewardship, sowing and reaping, and supporting God’s work through tithes and offerings. God has a lot to say about money and the wise use of it. You can’t afford not to find out.

Review – In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day

A good read. The author gets right to the point – your biggest opportunities are usually what seem like your biggest problems at the time. God invites us to take risks, abandon fear, do the impossible (through his power and for his glory). When we fail to join his work, we miss out on the greatness (no, not for ourselves, but to be involved in great things).

In addition, the author adds a nice bulleted summary at the end of each chapter. And, this is a quick read (about two hours for me). This is something you can consume quickly and then spend days (weeks, months) digesting.

It has similar tones/themes to other books in the genre; it seems like many of these guys work in the same circles, i.e. new, young, trendy church leaders. But, I can’t find any reason not to recommend this book. In fact, I think it would be highly helpful/encouraging for anyone facing serious life decision.

Long shots

A 50 to 1 shot won the Kentucky Derby Saturday.  50 to 1!!!  For those of you not from Kentucky or that don’t give a hoot about horse raising, you’re probably asking, “Who cares?”  But, think about it.  It’d be one thing if the winner was the favorite, or had decent odds, say 5 to 1.  But 50 to 1!  That’s incredible.

What else in life pays 50 to 1. After the final tally, a two dollar bet paid over $100, not to mention the exactas or trifectas.  Historically, this was the longest shot to ever win the derby since 1913, almost a hundred years.

That’s impressive.  What can we learn?  Long shots are long for a reason – 49 out of 50 times they won’t come in.  But, that one time they do, watch out!  Here come’s the payoff.

Kind of like Jesus.  By all appearances, this Jesus of Nazareth was a long shot too.  Not much pedigree.  Not much schooling.  Not much training.  Not much to look at.  (at least by the world’s standards).  Yet, what he did on the Cross was so unexpected.  And what he did three days later was so…”impossible” right?  And what that means to each of us is so much more important than any horse race or sporting event.

I wonder what kind of odds the handicappers would’ve given Jesus?

The end of the world

I’ve stopped watching the news.  I mean, come on.  Does every network have to run the same depressing stories, in the same depressing order?  The latest – swine flu.  Newsflash, prepare for the end of the world as we know it.  In six months, mutants will be ruling the earth, and the lucky few who are immune to this global outbreak will be stuck living by daylight, hiding during the night.

Oh wait, that’s a movie.  Just like SARS, this too will pass.  I’ve got a suggestion.  Trust in God – no matter what may come and despite the depressing news.

Fever

My (almost) two-year daughter has had a fever for the last 24 hours – pushing 104 degrees at times.  As I understand, this is very common for children, and one of those things you simply have to wait out.  Give ‘em tylenol and wait for the fever to come down.  Yet, no matter how many times the Kaiser Permanente nurse reassures me (over the phone, via their call center) that everything is going to be OK and that there is no need to bring her in … I worry.  I guess that’s a parent’s job – to worry over their kids.  No one wants to see their child suffer, to be in pain, to go through something really hard.  It’s heartbreaking, especially when you feel powerless to remedy the situation in any real way.

Perhaps that’s how God feels when his children suffer.  No, he’s not powerless.  But, He allows us to go through difficult circumstances for our own good (character development often).  Eventually, the hardship will pass and the suffering will end.  Yet, there must be a part of him, since he is our “father”, that just agnozies over seeing one of his children in pain.  Thankfully, the fever won’t last.

Bloodflow

How is it that my fingers and feet can be continually cold, while everything else on me is burning up.  Perhaps it’s some type of circulation problem.  I mean, come on, you shouldn’t have to wear mittens in LA – that’s just wrong.  Or perhaps I should just turn the heat on,  But again, this is LA.  Do we really need heat?

Kinda like our relationship with God.  Sometimes hot, sometimes cold.  But God provides the warmth.  He provides life.  He sustains…even in LA.

What month is it?

Easter was this past Sunday.  That means it is April.  But, even after living in LA for almost four years now, it seems that I still haven’t adjusted to the “lack” of seasonal change.  Yes, I know.  It does get a bit cold and rain during the Winter/Spring.  But can you really call it Winter?  Isn’t that an insult to all the people in the world who actually go through a real winter???  My sister lives in South Dakota, where there is snow on the ground for almost six months a year and the temperature often hits below zero.  Now that’s winter!

Anyway, LA is great…for weather that is.  It’s April, and although there is a bit of a nip outside, it still looks like summer.  Sunshine, clear skies (except for smog), and relatively warms temps.  God bless Southern California.
